This is a May 2022 video from The Urban Rescue Ranch in which Ben Christie shows how to make a splint for baby ostrich chicks with splayed legs, despite the kangaroo punching title.
He says zip ties can work but are rudimentary, so he uses medical tape, and he heads to the store for the right pads and gauze. One chick is already starting to walk well. Around the splint work he shows the other young birds, including an emu chick and Kevin's baby, now a teenager called Soldier Boy.
He also shows the pond after a rainstorm and a gate that broke and got boarded up. What gets me is how low-tech the fix is: tape, gauze and patience, and a chick that walks.
Ben Christie's channel, The Urban Rescue Ranch, has about 3.4 million subscribers, and his nonprofit is Waco Wildlife Rescue , which rehabilitates injured and orphaned native wildlife. 100% of merch proceeds fund the mission, and donations go through the site. A subscribe on his channel is a tiny, free way to say thanks.
Have you ever helped a baby animal learn to walk?
