A kid from Austin ended up in a superhero universe, a vampire show, and a Mortal Kombat movie. That's a fair summary of Mehcad Brooks, who was born in Austin on October 25, 1980.

Texas cares because he's one of ours, an Austin native who went to L.C. Anderson High School and built a long television career without ever sitting still. He turns 46 on October 25, 2026.

An Austin kid who played basketball

Brooks was born and raised in Austin. At L.C. Anderson High School he was a basketball player, and he graduated in 1999. The Austin Chronicle, writing about him in 2010, called him an Austin native who started acting in school and local plays at age 15.

His father, Billy Brooks, was a pro football receiver, so sports ran in the family. His mother, Alberta Phillips, was an editorial writer at the Austin American-Statesman, according to that same Chronicle profile. Sports on one side, words on the other. Acting seems a sensible place to land.

He headed to the University of Southern California in 1999 and studied in the School of Cinema-Television. Then a detour came along. Plenty of people would've called that a bust. Brooks kept going.

From Boston Public to Bon Temps

An early break was four episodes of Boston Public in 2003. After that came about two years of odd jobs, including washing windows at storefronts in Beverly Hills, per the Chronicle. I find that detail more convincing than any press release. Plenty of actors say they struggled, and fewer can name the windows.

The work picked up with Glory Road, the 2006 basketball film, where he played Harry Flournoy. Desperate Housewives came in 2005 and 2006, with Brooks playing Matthew Applewhite. Next he joined HBO's True Blood as Benedict "Eggs" Talley, a role he held from 2008 to 2010. Necessary Roughness followed, and he co-starred as Terrence "TK" King, the team's star player, from 2011 to 2013.

What strikes me is how many of those jobs lean on athletics or the grind of a team. An Austin basketball player playing a basketball player in Glory Road feels almost too neat, but it's right there in the credits.

Supergirl, Law & Order and a game movie

In 2015 Brooks started on Supergirl as James Olsen, the photographer and friend of Clark Kent who joins CatCo as art director. He stayed in the cast from the first season through the fifth. James left in season five, episode four, "In Plain Sight," by moving back to his hometown to fight corruption and crime. Entertainment Weekly reported he left to focus on films and develop a cable series.

In 2021 he played Jackson "Jax" Briggs in the Mortal Kombat reboot. In 2022 he joined Law & Order as Detective Jalen Shaw, a series regular in season 22. He took over the slot left by Anthony Anderson's Kevin Bernard. Brooks has described the character as a "calm wolf." TheWrap reported in 2025 that he was leaving after three seasons, ahead of season 25, in a decision it called mutual between Brooks and the show's creative team.

That's where his Law & Order run ends. I'd rather leave it there than guess what comes next.

So here's the question. Which Mehcad Brooks role do you remember first: Eggs, James Olsen, Jax, or Detective Shaw? And did you know he was an Austin kid with a mother at the Statesman and a father in the pros?
